the largely forgotten mentor of escher

today i would to feature the terrific artwork of a largely forgotten graphic artist: samuel jessurun de mesquita (amsterdam 1868-1944 ausschwitz), a mentor and friend of the more commonly known mauritis cornelis escher. i have encountered him a fews ago via an article in the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, and his graphics and paintings have profoundly moved me.
father (1938)
zebra (about 1918)
portrait of jaap jessurum de mesquita (1922)
all pictures are from the gorgeous book "samuel jessurun de mesquita", that is unfortunately out of print.
